――　Ｐａｇｅ１　――
Once upon a time in a place, there lived a greedy Old Woman.

昔々ある所に、慾の深い婆があって・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ２　――
She said "Please give it to me if you don't need it!" whenever she saw anything someone had.

・・・なんでもかでも人の物を見ると、若しいらないなら私に下さいと言って・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ３　――
And she got it.
・・・貰って行きました．

――　Ｐａｇｅ４　――
One day, a cat caught a mouse at a house in the neighborhood and left only the mouse's tail.

ある時、その近所の家で猫がネズミを捕って、尻尾だけ食い残してあるのを・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ５　――
People of the house were just about to throw it away.
・・・捨てようとしていた人たちが・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ６　――
"Even the Old Woman would not want this," they said laughingly.

・・・如何にあの婆さんでも、これだけは下さいと言うまいと言って笑っておりますと・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ７　――
Just then, the Old Woman came for killing time like the proverb of SPEAK OF THE DEVIL.

・・・噂をすれば影という諺の通り、ちょうどその年寄りが遊びに来ました．

――　Ｐａｇｅ８　――
And, she saw the mouse's tail and said "Please give it to me if you don't need it!"

そうしてそのネズミの尾を見て、もし御不要なら私に下さいと言いました．

――　Ｐａｇｅ９　――
All of them were surprised.

"What will you use it for?" they asked.

それには誰も彼も驚いてしまいまして、一体あなたはこれを何にするのかと問いますと・・・

――　Ｐａｇｅ１０　――
"Well, I will take this and use it for the sheath of a gimlet," she answered.

・・・はい持って行って錐の鞘にいたしますと答えたそうであります．
