その頃の私は、学校という重荷をちょっと肩からおろして置いただけに、生活には割合楽であった．

で、今までとは反対に、私が伊藤を助けることの方が多くなった．心づけなどに貰ったお金が一円でも二円でも溜まると私はそれを伊藤にやった．

そうでない時には、何かしら伊藤にやるものを考えていた．

Those days I already dropped out of school. And so, I was better off than before.

Contrary to the previous situation, I mostly supported Mr. Ito. I often got a tip. When I saved a dollar or two dollars, I gave the money to him. Otherwise I was thinking about something to give him.

そして、別に用もないのに十二時一時まで起きているこの家の習慣から、その間に生まれて来る自分の時間を利用して、何かしら伊藤のために造っていた．

The family members didn't go to bed until midnight although they had nothing in particular to do.

Such a custom of the family gave me spare time. Spending my spare time, I was always making something for Mr.Ito.

ある夜私は、例によって伊藤を送り出して行った．

ちょっと嵩のある風呂敷包みを抱えて、裏口から私は伊藤の後を追って行った．

One night I saw Mr. Ito to the door.

Holding a little bit bulky package, I went out of the back door and ran after him.

と、それを伊藤が見つけて、「一体、それは何です？」と怪訝そうに訊ねた．

「これ？これね、もう大分寒くなったでしょう．で、あなたに座蒲団こしらえて上げたの．それから枕もね」と私が答えて「ねぇ、あなたは、座蒲団もなし、枕が汚れてるでしょう？」と言うと、

伊藤はびっくりして、「どうしてあなたは僕の枕の汚れてることまで知っているのです」と訊き返した．

「どうしてしってるって？それはねぇ、この間あなたのところへ、うちの番頭さんが寄って昼寝したでしょう．山本さんが帰って来てあなたの枕が豚小屋の敷藁よりも汚いって言ってたからよ．座蒲団がないこともその時きいたの」

「それで、こしらえてくれたんですか」

「そうです．ほんとうは、私の襦袢の袖ならメリンスでいいと思ったのですけど、紅い色が這入っているのでいけないと思って、よくないけど更紗を買って来てつくったのよ．でも、座りよいように、普通の寸法よりはずっと大きくそして厚くしておきましたわ．枕の方は、あなたの好きな大きさがわからないからいい加減にしておきましたけれど、気に入らなかったら直しますからそう言って下さい」

He noticed me and said puzzledly "What's that?"

I answered "This? These days it has become pretty colder, and so I made a cushion for you. And a pillow."

And I said "There is no cushion in your room. And your pillow is dirty, right?"

Mr. Ito surprisedly asked me back "How did you get to know that my pillow is dirty?"

"You want to know how? Let's see. Chief Yamamoto recently visited you and took a nap, right? He came back and said that your pillow was dirtier than litter of a pigpen. And he also told me that you have no cushion."

"Then you made it for me, didn't you?"

"Yes. My undergarments are of stockinet, and so their sleeves are good for the material of cushion, but they have red color. And so, I thought that the color is bad. Then I bought calico although it isn't suitable for cushions. And I made this. It's comfortable to sit because this size is pretty larger and thicker than the standard size. I don't know what size of pillow you like. And so, I made it in the size that seems suitable. If it doesn't fit you, I will fix it. Please tell me if it is all right."
