Long long ago, a Man was working in a field of a hill alone.

昔々、或る村の爺が独りで山畑に出て働いていました．

――　０２　――
The field was very large.

So, he was laboring with difficulties.

畑が広くて余りにも骨が折れるので・・・

――　０３　――
"Ah! I wish that someone helped me! Even if he is a monkey, I will marry off one of my three daughters," he said.

あぁぁぁ猿でも好いから来て助けてくれるなら、3人ある娘のひとりは嫁にやるがなぁ、と言いました．

――　０４　――
Then, a Monkey appeared unexpectedly.

そうすると猿が1匹ひょっくり出て来まして・・・

And, the Monkey helped him with the field work diligently.

・・・せっせと畑仕事を手伝ってくれました．

――　０６　――
The Man thought, "Oh, dear! I've made a rash promise."

こいつは困った約束をしたわい、と思って・・・

――　０７　――
He came back to home.

・・・家に帰って来て・・・

――　０８　――
And, he talked with his three daughters.

・・・3人の娘と相談をすると・・・

Each of the older daughters said, "I can't marry a monkey."

And, they got angry.

・・・姉も2番目の娘も、猿のお嫁には行かれません、と言って怒りました．

――　１０　――
Only the youngest daughter was obedient.

"Because Father made the promise, we can't break it. I will marry him. I want a pot for my trousseau. And, please put a lot of needles in the pot!" she said.

末の娘だけが優しい女で、お父さんが約束をなさったのなら是非が無いから私が行きましょう．嫁入りの支度には甕をひとつ．その中へ縫い針を沢山に入れて下さい、と言いました．

The next morning, the Monkey in full dress of bridegroom came to meet the promised bride.

そうすると次の日の朝は、猿がチャント婿様の着物を着て約束の花嫁を迎えに来ました．

The bride's things were a pot and needles.

嫁の荷物はカメと縫い針・・・

――　１３　――
The Monkey carried them on his back.

これを猿が背中に負うて・・・

――　１４　――
The two were friendly chatting together.

And, they went to the mountain that the Monkey lived in.

・・・仲良く話をしながら猿の住む山へ行きました．

――　１５　――
A deep stream ran at the foot of the mountain.

山の麓には深い谷川が流れていて・・・

――　１６　――
There was a narrow log bridge over the stream.

・・・細い一本橋が架かっていました．

――　１７　――
When they started to walk across the bridge, the Monkey talked to her.

If we have a baby boy, what will we call him?

その橋を渡ろうとする時に猿のムコ様が話しかけました．

男の子が生まれたなら、何と云う名を付けよう．

――　１８　――
She answered to him.

Because of a son of my dear Monkey, we will call him Stream-Monkey.

猿どのの子だから、猿沢と付けましょう．

――　１９　――
If we have a baby girl, what will we call her?

女の子が出来たら、何と付けよう．

――　２０　――
Because the wisteria is flowering beautifully in this ravine, we will call her Wisteria.

この谷には藤の花がきれいだから、お藤と付けましょう．

――　２１　――
Saying so, they were crossing the bridge over the stream.

そう言って渡って行くうちに・・・

――　２２　――
Her hand touched his body slightly on the narrow log bridge.

・・・一本橋が細いので、ちょっと手が触ると・・・

――　２３　――
Then, the Monkey fell into the stream.

猿の婿は川へ落ちました．

――　２４　――
The Monkey was still carrying the pot with the needles on his back.

And, the waters carried him away.

そうして縫い針を入れた甕を背負ったままで、水に流されて行きました．

――　２５　――
At that time, the Monkey cried and sang a song.

The words still remain as follows:

• Stream-Monkey! Stream-Monkey!
• The mother of Wisteria shall cry. A dear!

その時に猿の婿が泣きながら、こんな歌を詠んだと云う事で、今でも其の文句が残っています．

• 猿沢や、猿沢や、
• お藤の母が泣くぞかわいや．
