―― 04 ――
One day, as usual, the Old Woman went to the river.

A melon flowed down from the upper stream.

―― 07 ――
Then, a tiny pretty baby girl was born from it.

They named her "Princess Melon" because she was born from the melon.

They fostered and loved her.

―― 08 ――
She grew up bigger and bigger and became a good pretty girl.

And she wove on a loom every day.

―― 09 ――
The Old Man and the Old Woman planned to go to the annual carnival at the village's shrine together with Princess Melon.

And so, they went to a town for hiring a palanquin.

―― 10 ――
During their abscence, Princess Melon shut the door tightly and was weaving in the house.

Then, a Goblin came and asked in a disguised voice.

"Please open this door a little bit!"

―― 11 ――
Carelessly, Princess Melon slightly opened the door.

―― 12 ――
The Goblin thrust his fearful hand in.

―― 13 ――
The Goblin fully opened the door.

He said "Well, Melon! I will take a persimmon fruit of the backyard for you."

And he went to the backyard with her.

―― 14 ――
And the Goblin stripped her naked and bound her to a persimmon tree.

―― 15 ――
The Goblin disguised himself by wearing Melon's dress.

And he was calmly weaving.

―― 16 ――
Then, the Old Man and the Old Woman came back from the town with a hired palanquin.

f:id:akanemachi:20180611095117j:plain

―― 17 ――
They said "Well, now! Princess Melon! Please get on this palanquin!"

f:id:akanemachi:20180611095137j:plain

―― 18 ――
They had the Goblin riding on the palanquin and started for the shrine.

And then, the true Princess Melon shouted behind the persimmon tree of the backyard.

"Why don't you take me? Oh, oh! The Goblin is riding on the palanquin. Oh, oh!"

f:id:akanemachi:20180611095158j:plain

―― 19 ――
The Old Man and the Old Woman were surprised at the voice and returned back.

And, the Old Man swung a scythe up.

f:id:akanemachi:20180611095218j:plain

―― 20 ――
He cut the Goblin's head off.

f:id:akanemachi:20180611095359j:plain

―― 21 ――
And, he discarded it into a millet field.

People say that the stems of millets turn red at autumn because they were stained with the blood of the Goblin.
