For a long time, a starving octopus was kept in a water tank of an aquarium.
Mournfully, there were always rays through the pale glass ceiling in the muted shade of rocks in the basement.
或る水族館の水槽で、ひさしい間、飢えた蛸が飼われていた．
地下の薄暗い岩の影で、青ざめた玻璃天井の光線が、いつも悲しげに漂っていた．
―― ０２ ――
No one remembered the dim water tank.
The octopus was thought to have died long before that.
And, in the dusty sunlight, only the rotten sea water had always filled the tank with the glass window.
だれも人々は、その薄暗い水槽を忘れていた．
もう久しい以前に、蛸は死んだと思われていた．
そして腐った海水だけが、埃っぽい日ざしの中で、いつも硝子窓の槽にたまっていた．
―― ０３ ――
But, the creature had not been dead.
The octopus had hidden behind a rock.
けれども動物は死ななかった．
蛸は岩影にかくれて居たのだ．
―― ０４ ――
He awoke.
And then, he had to suffer terrible hunger in the unhappy and forgotten tank for many days.
そして彼が目を覚ました時、不幸な、忘れられた槽の中で、幾日も幾日も、おそろしい飢餓を忍ばねばならなかった．
―― ０５ ――
The feed was nowhere to be found.
And, the food ran out completely.
And then, he plucked off his arms and ate them.
At first, one.
And, next.
Finally, he finished them.
どこにも餌食がなく、食物が全く尽きてしまった時、彼は自分の足をもいで食った．
まずその一本を．
それから次の一本を．
それから、最後に、それがすっかりおしまいになった時・・・

And then, he turned his body inside out.
And he started to eat a part of his guts, bit by bit, from a part to the other part, successively.
・・・今度は胴を裏がえして、内臓の一部を食いはじめた．
少しづつ、他の一部から一部へと．
順々に．
―― ０７ ――
Thus, the octopus finished up his whole body; skin, brain, stomach, every parts, all over, entirely.
かくして蛸は、彼の身体全体を食いつくしてしまった．
外皮から、脳髄から、胃袋から．
どこもかしこも、すべて残る隈なく．
完全に．
―― ０８ ――
A certain morning, a keeper unexpectedly came there.
At that time, the tank was empty.
The clear salt water of indigo blue and the soft seagrass were wavering beyond the dull and dusty glass.
The creature no longer appeared anywhere at the rocks.
The octopus vanished actually and perfectly.
或る朝、ふと番人がそこに来た時、水槽の中は空っぽになっていた．
曇った埃っぽい硝子の中で、藍色の透き通った潮水と、なよなよした海草とが動いていた．
そしてどこの岩の隅々にも、もはや生物の姿は見えなかった．
蛸は実際に、すっかり消滅してしまったのである．

However, the octopus did not die.
He disappeared, but even so, he has existed there forever in the old empty and forgotten tank of the aquarium.
Forever --- probably, over centuries --- the invisible creature has existed with certain awful lack and discontent.
けれども蛸は死ななかった．
彼が消えてしまった後ですらも、尚且つ永遠にそこに生きていた．
古ぼけた、空っぽの、忘れられた水族館の槽の中で．
永遠に ―― おそらくは幾世紀の間を通じて ―― 或る物すごい欠乏と不満をもった、人の目に見えない動物が生きて居た．
