ＷＥＢ絵本「蟹淵と安長姫」

むかしむかし隠岐島の元屋という村に、年とった一人の木こりがありました．

Once upon a time, there was an Old Woodman in Motoya village of Okinoshima island.

或る日、安長川の奥に入って、滝の後ろの山で木を切っていましたが・・・

One day, the Old Woodman went to the upper stream of Yasunaga river.

And he was hewing down a tree at a hill behind a waterfall.

・・・つい誤って手に持つ斧を取り落して・・・

The Old Woodman mistakenly dropped his ax.

・・・滝の壺の小さな円い淵の中に沈めてしまいました．

The ax sank into the small round basin of the waterfall.

そうすると忽ち、その淵に浪が起こり水煙が立って、そこら辺が真っ暗になりました．

そうして水の中から黒い棘の生えた棒のような物が、浮かび上がって来ました．

Then, the basin suddenly swelled with a surge

A cloud of spray came up from the waterfall.

And the darkness covered all around.

Something black like a spiny stick came up to the surface of water.

爺はこの様子を見て非常に驚き怖れて、一目散に山の麓の方へ逃げて来ますと・・・

The Old Woodman was surprised at this situation with fright.

And he ran down at full speed to the bottom of the hill.

・・・後ろから、まことに優しい声で、爺よ、少し待っておくれという人があります．

Someone spoke to the Old Woodman with a tender voice behind him.

"Please wait a minuet, Mr. Old Woodman!"

振り返ってみると、絵にあるような美しい若いお姫様が、ちょうどその滝のところに立っておられました．

私は安長姫といって、昔から、この淵に住む者だが、何時の頃よりか、ここには大きな蟹が来て住むことになって、夜も昼も私を苦しめていた．

今日はそなたが斧を落としてくれたによって、悪い蟹は片腕を切り落とされて弱っている．

今、大きな棘の生えたその腕が、流れて行ったのを見たであろう．

そのお礼を言わなければならぬが、まだ片方の腕が残っているので、安心をしていることが出来ぬ．

蟹は今、淵の底の横穴の中で、腕の痛みで唸っている．

どうか、もう一度この斧を滝の上から落としておくれと言って、さっき水に沈めた斧を手渡しました．

The Old Woodman looked back.

And he found a picturesque pretty young Goddess standing by the waterfall.

She said:

I am Yasunaga Goddess;

And I have lived in this water since old times;

A big crab came here and settled down before I noticed it;

And it has harassed me nights and days;

Today, you dropped the ax;

So, its arm was cut off and the evil crab has got weak;

You just now saw its big spiny arm float and carried down;

I really must express to you my gratitude;

But I cannot feel safe because another arm still remains;

The crab now groans with pain in a cave at the bottom of the basin;

Would you please drop this ax again from above the waterfall.

And she handed him the ax which sank in the water a while ago.

爺は怖ろしながら、水の神をお助け申したいと思って、再び元の山に戻って、言いつけられた通りに、その斧を高い所から滝壺に投げ入れますと・・・

The Old Woodman felt a fear, but he wanted to save the Goddess of water.

So, he went back to the hilltop.

He threw the ax into the basin from a high place as she said.

・・・姫神は大そうにお喜びで、これから後は富貴長命、なんなりともそなたの願うままと言って、林の中に帰って行かれました．

The Goddess was delighted at that.

"Your hopes for wealth, health and everything will come true from now on," she said.

And she returned back into the woods.

それから幾日かの後、甲羅の周りの一丈もある蟹の、大爪の両方ともないのが、死んで海の口へ流れて出たのを、村の人が見つけまして、木こりの爺の言った話を、本当だと思いました．

そうして川の名前を安長川、滝壺を蟹淵と呼ぶようになったのそうです．

この川の流れはどんな日照りの年でも水が絶えませぬ．

そうしてこの水の神に雨乞いをするときっと雨が降るということであります．

Several days later, a dead crab of a six-foot-shell without both claws was carried to the mouth of the river.

Village people found it and thought the Old Woodman's tale right.

So, the river has been called as Yasunaga River and the basin has been called as Crab Depth.

And this river never stop its water flow even if there is a long spell of dry weather in a year.

People say that the rain will surely fall if they pray for rain to the Goddess of water.
