その間を飛び違い入り乱れる数知れぬ夜光虫の光り．

それは世界中が金襴になって踊り出すかのようでした．

ルルととミミは抱き合ったまま、夢のように見とれていました．

その前に数限りない御馳走が並びました．

Rays of the countless noctilucas were passing through them in chaos.

It looked as if the world became a brocade and started dancing.

Hugging each other, Ruroo and Memie were dreamily charmed with it.

A lot of special dishes were served to them.

月の光りはますます明るく御殿の中に差し込みました．

そうして、女王様の嬉しそうなお顔やお姿を神々しく照らしだしました．

そのうちに月の光りが次第次第に西に傾いて行きました．

The moonlight entered the Palace more brightly.

And it shone on the smiling face and the divine figure of the Queen.

Before long, the moonlight began to decline westward gradually.

ルルとミミの陸に帰る時が来ました．

ルルとミミは、女王様から貸して頂いた大きな美しい海月に乗って、湖の御殿の奥庭から陸の方へおいとまをする事になりました．

女王様はルルとミミを今一度抱きしめて頬ずりをされました．そうして、こんなお祈りをされました．

「この美しい兄妹は、この後どんな事がありましても離れ離れになりませぬように」

ルルもミミも女王様が懐かしくなりました．何だかいつまでも、この女王様に抱かれて、可愛がって頂きたいように思って、涙をホロホロと流しました．

けれども女王様は二人をソッと抱き上げて、海月の上にお乗せになりました．

「海月よ．お前は絶えず光りながら、この兄妹を水の上まで送り届けよ．そうして、悪い魚が近付かないように毒の針を用意して行けよ」

海月は黙って浮き上がりました．

The time came when Ruroo and Memie would go back to the land.

Ruroo and Memie were going to ride on a big beautiful jellyfish which was lent by the Queen.

And they were going to leave the backyard of the Palace of the lake for the land.

The Queen hugged them once again and put her cheek on their cheeks.

And she prayed, "These pretty brother and sister will never be apart whatever may happen."

Ruroo and Memie felt a longing for the Queen. Somehow they wished that they were hugged and petted by the Queen forever. And tears flowed down their cheeks.

However, the Queen lifted them up to the jellyfish tenderly.

"Jellyfish! You must keep on shining. And you must send these brother and sister to the water surface. Get your venom needles ready to keep off the evil fishes! Go!"

The jellyfish rose silently.

咲きそろった水藻の花は二人の足もとを後ろへ後ろへと、なびいて行きました．

御殿の屋根は薔薇色に、または真珠色に輝きながら、水の底の方へ小さく小さくなって行きました．

宝石を散りばめたような海月の足の下へ・・・

「ネェ、ルル兄様！」

「ナアニ・・・ミミ」

「女王様は何だか、お母様のようじゃなかって」

「ああ、僕もそう思ったよ」

「あたし、何だかお別れするのが悲しかったわ」

「ああ、僕もミミと二人きりで湖の底に居たいような気持ちがしたよ」

こんな事を二人は話し合いました．

そうして二人は抱き合って、海月の足の下をのぞきながら何遍も何遍も女王様のいらっしゃる方へ「左様なら」を送りました．

Water plants in full bloom were swaying backward and backward under their feet.

Shining in rose color or pearl color, the roof of the Palace was getting smaller and smaller toward the bottom of the water under the arms of the jellyfish as inlaid with jewels......

"Hey, Ruroo!"

"What...... Memie?"

"I felt the Queen was Mom."

"Ah! Me too."

"Somehow, I was sad to say good-by."

"Ah, I felt like staying with you at the bottom of the lake."

They talked like this.

And they were hugging each other and were looking down under the arms of the Jellyfish.

They said their goodbys toward the Queen again and again.

ルルとミミが湖のおもてに浮き上がった所には美しい一艘の船が用意してありました．その上にルルとミミは乗り移りました．

「海月よ．有難うよ．ルルとミミが心から御礼を言っていたと、女王様に申し上げておくれ」

海月は、やはり黙ってユラユラと水の底に沈んで行きました．

兄妹は船縁につかまって、その海月の薄青い光りが水の底へ深く深く、とうとう見えなくなって仕舞うまで見送っておりました．

A fine boat was waiting for Ruroo and Memie at the water surface where they came up.

Ruroo and Memie changed to the boat.

"Thank you, Jellyfish! Please give our best regards to the Queen!"

The Jellyfish began to sink toward the bottom of the water silently and swingingly.

The brother and sister were holding a side of the boat.

And they watched the Jellyfish until its pale light disappeared into the bottom of the water.

お月様は今、西に沈み掛けていました．微かに吹き出した暁の風が二人の船を陸の方へ吹き送り始めました．

湖の面には牛乳のような朝靄が棚引き掛けていました．

その上から、まだ誰も起きていないらしい懐かしい故郷の村が見えました．

その村のお寺の鐘つき堂に小さく小さく微かに微かに光る鐘・・・ルルはそれをジッと見つめていましたが、その眼からどうした訳か涙がポトポトとしたたり落ちました．

「まあ．お兄様、どうなすったの．なぜお泣きになるの・・・」

ルルは静かに振り返りました．

「ミミや．おまえは、村に帰ったら一番に何をしようと思っているの・・・」

「それはもう・・・なにより先に、あの鐘の音を聞きたいと思いますわ．あの鐘は今度こそ、きっと鳴るに違いないのですから・・・どんなにか、いい音でしょう・・・」とミミはもうルルの顔を仰ぎながら、その音が聞こえるように溜息をしました．

ルルも一緒に溜息をしました．

The moon was now setting in the west.

The wind of daybreak rose slightly. And it began to blow their boat toward the shore.

Milky morning haze was about to hang over the surface of the lake.

Their dear village, where nobody likely woke up, came into sight beyond it.

The little bell was faintly shining at the bell tower of the temple in the village...... Ruroo gazed at it. Somehow, tears dropped from his eyes.

"Oh, my dear brother! What's the matter? Why are you crying......"

Ruroo calmly looked back.

"Memie. What will you do first when we get back to the village......"

"Fist of all..... I will hear the sound of the bell because the bell is sure to ring next time...... How will it sound......" Memie said with a sigh. She was looking up at Ruroo's face as if she already heard its sound.

Ruroo sighed too.

「ミミや．そうして、あの鐘が鳴ったなら村の人はきっと、わたし達を可愛がって二度と再び湖の底へは行けないようにして仕舞うだろうねぇ」

「まあ．お兄様はそれじゃ、湖の底へお帰りになりたいと思っていらっしゃるの・・・」

ルルは頷いて、またひとつ溜息をしました．そうして、またも涙をハラハラと落としました．

「ああ．ミミや．わたしは、あの鐘の音を聞くのが急に怖くなった．村の人に可愛がられて湖の底へ、また行くことが出来なくなるだろうと思うと、悲しくて悲しくて、たまらなくなった．わたしは湖の御殿へ帰りたくて帰りたくて、たまらなくなったのだ．わたしは死ぬ迄あそこの噴水の番がしていたくなったのだ」

「それなら、お兄様・・・あの鐘の音はもう、お聞きにならなくてもいいのですか・・・お兄様・・・聞きたいとはお思いにならないのですか」

「ああ．そうなんだよ、ミミ・・・だから、おまえは私の代わりにも一度ひとりで村に帰って、あの鐘を搗いてくれるように村の人に頼んでくれないか．あの鐘はルルの作りそこないではありません、と云ってね．それから兄さんの所へおいで・・・兄さんは、その鐘の音を湖の底で聞いているから・・・おまえの来るのを待っているから・・・」と言う内に、ルルは立ち上がって湖の中に飛び込もうとしました．

「アレ．お兄様、なんで、そんなに情ない事をおっしゃるの・・・それなら、あたしも連れて行ってちょうだい」とミミは慌ててルルを抱き止めようとしました．

そうすると不思議にもルルの姿は煙のように消え失せて仕舞いました．

船も・・・お月様も・・・湖も・・・村の影も・・・朝靄も消え失せて、後には唯なんとも言われぬ芳ばしい匂いばかりが消え残りました．

"Memie! If the bell sounds, the people in the village are sure to love us . And they will never allow us to go to the bottom of the lake, I think."

"Oh! So, you think you'll go back to the bottom of the lake, don't you......"

Ruroo nodded and sighed once again. And he shed tears again.

"Ah, Memie! I'm afraid to hear the sound of the bell. I suppose the people in the village will love us and they won't allow me to go to the bottom of the lake again. And so, I'm sad beyond words. I want to go back to the Palace of the lake. I want to look after the fountain in my life."

"So, Ruroo...... You don't need to hear the sound of the bell anymore, right? Ruroo...... You don't want to hear it, right?"

"Ah! Right, Memie...... Please go back to the village once and alone for me! Will you ask the people in the village to toll the bell? Please say to the people that the bell isn't a failure to Ruroo! And, come to me! I'll hear the sound of the bell at the bottom of the lake...... I'll wait for you......" said Ruroo, who stood up and tried to dive into the lake.

"Oh, Ruroo! Why do you say such a pity thing...... So, please let me go with you......" said Memie, who tried to hold on to him in a hurry.

Oddly enough, Ruroo disappeared like smoke at that time.

Also, the boat and the moon and the lake and the morning haze disappeared.

After that, only the indescribable fragrance remained.
