ただ独りで湖のふちへ来て、真黒く濁った水の底深く沈んでしまいました．
Ruroo came to the lakeside alone.
And he deeply sank in the black and muddy water.
村の人が心配していた悲しい事がとうとう来たのです．
ミミは独りポッチになってしまったのです．
けれどもミミはどうして、あの優しい兄さんのルルに別れる事が出来ましょう．
村の人がどんなに親切に慰めても、ミミはただ泣いてばかりいました．
そうして朝から晩まで湖のふちへ来て、死んだ兄さんがもしや浮き上がりはしまいかと思ってボンヤリ草の上に坐っておりました．
The sad thing which the village people worried about came true eventually.
Memie was left alone.
Why can Memie part from her tender brother Ruroo?
Even if the village people comforted her lovingly, Memie did nothing but cry.
And she came to the lakeside.
Thinking that her dead brother might come up to the surface, she kept sitting on the grass from morning till night vacantly.
―――可哀そうなミミ．
ルルが湖に沈んでから何日目かの晩に、湖の向うからまん丸いお月様がソロソロと昇って来ました．
ミミはその光に照らされた湖の上を眺めながら、家へ帰るのも忘れて坐っておりました．
湖の周りに数限りなく咲いている睡蓮の花も、その夜はいつものように眠らずにミミの姿と一緒に開いた花の影を水の上に浮かしておりました．
お月様はだんだん高く上がって来ました．それと一緒に睡蓮の花には涙のような露が一杯にこぼれ掛かりました．
ミミは睡蓮の花が自分の為に泣いてくれるのだと思いまして一緒に涙を流しながら、お礼を言いました．
「睡蓮さん．あなた達は私がなぜ泣いているか、よく御存じですわね」
------ A pitiful girl, Memie.
Several days passed after Ruroo sank in the lake.
At the evening, a full moon rose slowly beyond the lake.
Memie was looking out over the surface of the lake lighted by the moon.
She forgot to go home and was sitting down.
Countless Water-lilies were in bloom at the water's edge around the lake.
Unusually, their flowers were not asleep at that night.
The shadows of the flowers and the figure of Memie was reflected on the water surface.
The moon rose gradually higher.
A lot of tears of dew spilled on the flowers of the Water-lilies.
Memie thought that the Water-lilies were crying for her.
She expressed her thanks with tears.
"O Water-lilies! You know why I'm crying."
その時、睡蓮のひとつがユラユラと揺れたと思うと、小さな声でミミにささやきました．
「可哀想なお嬢様．あなたはもし、お兄様にお会いになりたいなら、花の鎖をお作りになりなさい．そうして明日の晩、お月様が湖の真上にお出でになる時までに、その花の鎖が湖の底まで届く長さにお作りなさい．その鎖につかまって、湖の底の真珠の御殿へいらっしゃい．お兄様のルル様を湖の底へお呼びになったのは、その女王様です」
At that time, one of the Water-lilies swayed gently.
And it whispered to Memie:
O pitiful girl!
If you want to see your brother, make a chain of flowers!
You have to make the chain before the moon will rise just above the lake tomorrow evening;
And the chain must be so long that it can reach to the bottom of the lake;
Holding the chain, you will be able to go to the Pearly Palace at the bottom of the lake;
The Queen called your brother Ruroo to the bottom of the lake.
睡蓮の花がここまで言った時、あたりが急に薄暗くなりました．
お月様が黒い雲に隠れたのです．
The flower of the Water-lily said so. At that time, the darkness suddenly covered all around.
The moon hid behind a black cloud.
そうしてそれと一緒に睡蓮の花はひとつひとつに花びらを閉じ始めました．
And then, the flowers of the Water-lilies began to close their petals one after another.
ミミはあわててその花の一つに尋ねました．
「睡蓮さん．ちょっと花びらを閉じるのを待って下さい．どうして真珠の御殿の女王様は兄さんをお呼びになったのですか」
けれども、暗い水の上の睡蓮はもう花を開きませんでした．
「湖の底の女王様は、どうして私だけひとりぽっちになすったのですか」とミミは悲しい声で叫びました．
けれども、湖の周りの睡蓮はスッカリ花を閉じてしまって、ひとつも返事をしませんでした．
Memie said to one of the flowers hastily.
"Water-lily! Please stop closing your petals for a while! Why did the Queen of the Pearly Palace call my brother?"
But the Water-lily on the dark water didn't open its flower anymore.
"Why did the Queen at the bottom of the lake make me alone?" Memie cried in a sad voice.
But the Water-lilies around the lake already closed all of their flowers. And no one answered.
お月様もそれから夜の明けるまで雲の中に隠れたまんまでした．
The moon was hidden by clouds from then till dawn.
